Clovelly is very historic. Once owned by the wife of William the Conqueror, it is listed in the Domesday Book. All Saints Church is the oldest building in Clovelly and dates back to the Norman period.
The village clings to a 400-foot cliff. The famous cobbled street, known as ‘Up-a-long’ or ‘Down-a-long’, was built from stones hauled up from the beach. For many years donkeys were the only form of access. Seeing the famous donkeys should be the top of the agenda when visiting. However, there are currently 14 of them, and their nationalities include English, Welsh, Irish and French.
